Reports to: Director, Finance

Responsible for: To support the Director in daily supervision of staff, bi-weekly HQ payroll administration, oversight of accounting services (A/P, A/R, Payroll), Business Planning and Forecasting, and other related duties in accordance with legislation and professional standards and practices.

Position Summary:               

This position is accountable for the preparation of Management/Executive Payroll; integrity of monthly financial reporting and sub-ledgers, banking and sub-ledger reconciliations, trust accounts reporting, monthly journal entries, and the overall supervision and engagement of the four-person accounting team.  We are seeking a professional manager who is collaborative, excels at multi-tasking, and demonstrates exceptional communications skills.  This individual is committed to contributing to a respectful, safe and welcoming work environment for all employees.  A team player, this position motivates, leads by example, and strives to ensure a barrier-free learning and working environment.  It is essential that the chosen applicant ensures compliance with all applicable laws and regulations, professional standards, and CNS’ policies and procedures.

Duties and Responsibilities

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Accounting:  Management of the monthly accounting cycle and daily support of all accounting team functions and employees, including Payroll, Accounts Receivable and Accounts Payable, and ensures timeliness, accuracy, compliance with professional standards, legislation, regulations and CNS policies, including the following:
  1. Preparation of HQ Management Payroll:  bi-weekly payroll, employee tax remittances, annual financial reports;
  2. Monthly sub-ledgers, balance sheet and trust account reconciliations;
  3. Supports the preparation of monthly financial reporting, periodic forecasts, and contractual metrics for executive team and departmental management;
  4. Supports the Director, Finance, and contributes to the preparation and analysis of the annual budget approval and business planning processes;
  5. Provides all required reconciliations, reporting, and analysis to ensure successful annual year-end financial audits;
  6. Leads, identifies, evaluates, and implements financial and managerial accounting process improvements;
  • Decision Support:  Project costing analysis and financial support of Operations;
  • Staffing and Team Development:  Coaching and mentoring staff, conducting performance management, training and development to ensure engagement, competence and success.

Qualifications and Skill Requirements

  • BComm or BBA minimum, with preference to candidates with an accounting designation;
  • Minimum 5 years’ successful accounting management experience, including two years’ in a recent leadership role;
  • Superior proficiency with accounting software, such as Sage 300, project job costing, business intelligence modules, and Excel analytics tools, and an ability to champion and advance organizational capacity and usage of each of these programs;
  • Demonstrated experience in the production of a medium to large payroll, preferably in a geographically decentralized organization with many cost centres, variable pay rates and compliance standards;
  • Demonstrated professionalism;
  • Demonstrated problem-solving and interpersonal skills applied toward roles, duties and team development;
  • Previous military and/or policing experience is considered an asset.
