Commissionaires Nova Scotia (CNS), as Canada’s premier security company, is a not-for-profit corporation that offers diverse job opportunities to former members of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and qualified others seeking employment in the Security Industry.  CNS provides standardized extensive training prior to dispatching its staff on assignment.

Reports to:  District Manager

Responsible for: The security and safety of people, property, and information

While Duties vary by assignment, the duties and responsibilities inherent in this security-related role may include, but are not limited to:

  • Emergency Management
  • On-foot perimeter and search patrols, inside and out-of-doors in all environmental conditions
  • Alarm and Security System monitoring and response
  • Responsible for the health and safety of self and others in the workplace
  • Responsible for adherence to CNS’ health, safety, environmental and quality policies and systems and practices
  • Adherence to CNS’ Policies, Site Work Instructions, and Site Supervisor’s direction
  • Security Officers
  • Mobile Patrols
  • Site Reception and Administration
  • Site Access Control

Qualifications & Skills:

The role of a Commissionaire requires both physical and mental fitness, as the level of responsibility to ensure security is high, and often involving work in all types of environmental conditions, at all times of the day or night.

Qualifications for Success in this role include, but are not limited to:

  • Previous experience in law enforcement, CAF, or security an asset
  • Graduate of a college/university security-related program an asset
  • Bilingualism (French/English) an asset
  • Computer literacy, and/or an aptitude to learn an asset
  • Excellent verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to multi-task, prioritize, and adapt to changes
  • Ability and willingness to successfully obtain a first aid certificate
  • Ability and willingness to successfully complete CNS’ Security Officer Course
  • Physical fitness to include:
    • Ability to navigate multiple flights of stairs with ease
    • Ability to navigate uneven terrain to conduct foot patrols in all weather conditions
    • Good dexterity and balance
    • Good vision and hearing
    • Superior attention to detail, including ability to hear, observe, or smell changes to the work environment
  • Mental alertness to include:
    • React calmly, quickly and appropriately in a crisis situation
    • Ability to concentrate for a period of up to 12 hours
    • A good memory
    • Demonstrated sound judgement and problem-solving ability
    • Ability to remain alert up to 12 hours
  •    Demonstrated professionalism and sound judgment
  •    Excellent customer service skills
  •    Possession of a valid Nova Scotia driver’s license, or access to reliable transportation
  •    Ability to obtain a security clearance
