The Canada Army Run arrived one weekend prior to the Invictus Games Toronto 2017, an 8-day event which allows ill and injured war veterans to compete in sports on an international stage. Stay tuned for upcoming posts and details of the events happening Sep. 23-30.Incessant pounding on your joints, blisters forming on your heels, chaffing, sweating, and killer shin splints. Add a 30+ Celsius humidex into the mix. Doesn’t that sound like the perfect way to spend your Sunday?
Turns out, at least 22,000 people wouldn’t have it any other way!
Thursday Sept. 14, saw the start of a brand new season for Commissionaires Nova Scotia (CNS) with the official opening of their new Headquarters in Bedford Commons.
There was an excited buzz in the air while CNS HQ staff worked as a team to prepare for guests’ arrival at 3 p.m. The staff were eagerly awaiting His Honour, The Honourable Arthur J. LeBlanc, Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, and Honorary Patron of Commissionaires Nova Scotia-- who they knew would be unveiling a dedication plaque. He was joined by Her Honour, Mrs. Patsy LeBlanc.
Commissionaires is more than a security company. A large number of commissionaires across the country volunteer their personal time to help improve their communities in one fashion or another.
A few commissionaires with our Great Lakes Division were recently awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, an official Canadian Honour that recognizes the dedication and exemplary commitment of volunteers. The three commissionaire recipients are, Maj. (Ret’d) Hal Buller, CD, Capt. (Ret’d) John Atkin, CD, and Mr. Stephen Atkin.
On a hot, Thursday morning in Dieppe, New Brunswick, the atmosphere is upbeat, spirits are high and tournament organizers are eagerly awaiting the Soldier On golf tournament activities to begin at the Fox Creek Golf and Country Club. Through the double doors, a man dressed in a clean, pressed, sharp Commissionaires uniform walks in. Denis Valee immediately reports for volunteer duty at the event.
$100,000 Awarded Since 2002
Congratulations to this year’s winners of the CNS Board of Governors’ Educational Awards. The recipients are the children or grandchildren of active commissionaires who have demonstrated outstanding scholastic, extra-curricular and community achievements. Each winner receives $1,500 toward their post-secondary education.
The Selection Committee reviewed a considerable number of applications, and had the difficult task of choosing only six recipients:
Our BC Division kept busy this year as they said farewell to CEO Dan Popowich when he retired in early June and welcomed new CEO Chris Mitchell. Although the changes are not physically apparent, when an organization comes under new leadership, an atmospheric change is inevitable. The Division handled it with grace, never skipping a beat.
Our Northern Alberta Division entered the security technology realm in 2001. The intent was to complement its primarily personnel-oriented services. In doing so, they established Canada’s first central monitoring centre where video monitoring, GPS tracking, and lone-worker monitoring services were conducted.
Jean-Daniel joined the Ottawa Division as a second-generation commissionaire in 2009, after completing CEGEP (post-secondary school). Initially assigned to provide access control, Jean-Daniel, J-D to his colleagues and friends, quickly proved himself to be highly adaptable, reliable and efficient.
As we’ve noted before, Commissionaires Southern Saskatchewan Division has the honour of doing on-field security at Mosaic Stadium every time the Saskatchewan Roughriders hit the gridiron (yes, we’re jealous). Yesterday was different.
CFL team host Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) appreciation events throughout the season. In Saskatchewan, we—Canada’s largest employer of veterans—get to be an integral part of the event. Our veterans who worked at the game donned their military honours.
