Commissionaires Southern Alberta is responsible for providing professional security services for Calgary, Red Deer, Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, and Suffield. Our employees work in a variety of roles such as General Security, Alarm Response, Concierge and Support to Law Enforcement, and Support to Government.

As part of our ever-expanding work force, we are looking for security guards to work days at the Calgary Police Service (CPS) Westwinds Investigative Services Building (ISB).

Job Purpose

The WW ISB Security is responsible for 24/7/365 alarm and site monitoring for the CPS headquarters campus and all satellite locations. This position requires strong computer skills to lock and unlock areas remotely, identify sworn and civilian employees within the CPS, monitor camera arrays and submit work orders to the Facilities/Infrastructure department to conduct repairs. The security person will be expected to follow existing policies and procedures and assist with their development and updating. He/she is required to make informed and sound decisions about personnel and building security and deal with any unexpected facility maintenance issues that may arise during their shift.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to shift commencement and conduct handover from outgoing Commissionaire
  • Ensure front doors are automatically locked at 18:00 (Monday-Friday)
  • Ensure two patrols (one internal and one external) are conducted during shift
  • Conduct system tree checks three (3) times per shift (CPS internal computer programs)
  • Lock and unlock doors via computer for internal and satellite locations
  • Assist the public to the correct department for assistance or answer general questions
  • Deal with unruly/belligerent persons
  • Maintain accurate shift logs, registers and reports
  • Write incident reports
  • Develop intimate knowledge of the buildings to direct emergency personnel
  • Sign in/out day pool cars and confirm bag contents for each vehicle
  • Submit work orders for building repairs and maintenance to facilities found during shift and from the Mobile Patrols during their rounds
  • Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate person or department
  • Conduct internal and external building patrols and checks
  • Train new employees to the position
  • Assist in the development of, or changes to policies and procedures
  • Respect private and confidential information at all times
  • Clean doorways of snow when facilities are closed (non-business hours)
  • Escort guests throughout buildings and properties
  • Drive to satellite locations confirming building/location security
  • Any other as directed that may be considered reasonable

Education Requirements

  • Employment subject to CPS Enhanced Security Check
  • Grade 12 or Alberta GED equivalent
  • Current/valid Security licence
  • Class 5 driver’s licence with clean driving abstract
  • Previous security experience an asset
  • Previous Military experience an asset

Knowledge Requirements

  • Strong computer skills required and in particular Microsoft Office, Outlook and Suite. CPS specific programs will be taught
  • Knowledge of different phone operations
  • Background in customer service an asset

Skill Requirements

  • Outgoing and personable who can operate in a team environment and work well independently
  • Able to prioritize events and balance customer service at front desk while dealing with large numbers of visitors for courses, and police inquiries
  • Strong written and spoken skills required. English essential
  • Able to self-organize and manage time and priorities
  • Able to remain calm and professional with English as second language persons
  • Coordinate own schedule to complete rounds within the allotted time given
  • Operate phone equipment provided
  • Neat dress and deportment at all times
  • Must be willing to sign Privacy Agreement for personal information

Working Conditions

  • 06:00 to 18:00 daily, four days on and four days off including weekends and holidays
  • Prolonged sitting or standing at front desk monitoring alarms, cameras and personnel
  • Walking internal and external patrols up to 2 hours each patrol
  • Signing in visitors to the facilities
  • Hectic pace during morning rush to gain access and see appropriate persons
  • Deal with language barriers
  • Deal with unruly/belligerent people

Fitness Requirements

  • Able to constantly stand for at least two (2) hours at a time
  • Able to sit consistently for four (4) hours at a time
  • Able to use PPE for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to conduct extensive foot patrols in excess of 2 1/2 hours, including interior and exterior patrols in all weather conditions
  • Able to repeatedly climb up and down stairs with Westwinds compound facilities
  • Able to look at computer screens for prolonged periods
