As part of our ever-expanding work force, we are looking for security guards to work nights at the Calgary Police Service (CPS) Westwinds Investigative Services Building (ISB).

Job Purpose

The WW (ISB) Security person is responsible for 24/7/365 alarm and site monitoring for the CPS headquarters campus and all satellite locations concentrating on the Investigative Services building. This position requires strong computer skills to lock and unlock areas remotely, identify sworn and civilian employees within the CPS, monitor camera arrays and submit work orders to Facilities/Infrastructure department to conduct repairs. The security person will be expected to follow existing policies and procedures and assist with their development and updating. He/she is required to make informed and sound decisions about personnel and building security and deal with any unexpected facility maintenance issues that may arise during their shift. This person is responsible for all CPS off site alarm monitoring during silent hours in conjunction with HQ security personnel.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Arrive a minimum of 15 minutes prior to shift commencement and conduct handover from outgoing Commissionaire
  • Ensure two patrols (internal and external) are conducted during shift
  • Conduct system tree checks three(3) times per shift (CPS internal computer programs)
  • Lock and unlock doors via computer for both internal and satellite locations
  • Deal with unruly/belligerent persons
  • Maintain accurate shift logs, registers and reports
  • Write incident reports
  • Develop intimate knowledge of the buildings to direct emergency personnel and respond to queries
  • Develop positive relationships with uniformed, plain clothes officers and civilian personnel
  • Sign in/out day pool cars and confirm bag contents for each vehicle
  • Submit work orders for building repairs and maintenance to facilities found during shift and for the Mobile Patrols during their rounds
  • Answer phones and direct calls to appropriate person or department
  • Train new employees to the position
  • Assist in the development of, or changes to policies and procedures
  • Respect private and confidential information at all times
  • Clean doorways of snow when facilities are closed (non-business hours)
  • Escort guests throughout buildings and properties
  • Drive to satellite locations confirming building/location security

Education Requirements

  • Employment subject to CPS Enhanced Security Check
  • Grade 12 or Alberta GED equivalent
  • Current/valid Security licence
  • Class 5 driver’s licence with clean driving abstract
  • Previous security experience an asset
  • Military experience an asset

Knowledge Requirements

  • Strong computer skills required and in particular Microsoft Office, Outlook and Suite. CPS specific programs will be taught
  • Knowledge of different phone operations

Skill Requirements

  • Outgoing and personable who can operate in a team environment and work well independently
  • Able to prioritize events during emergencies
  • Strong written and spoken skills required. English essential
  • Able to self-organize and manage time and priorities
  • Coordinate own schedule to complete rounds within the allotted time given
  • Operate phone equipment provided
  • Neat dress and deportment at all times
  • Must be willing to sign Privacy Agreement for the protection of personal information

Working Conditions

  • 18:00 to 06:00 daily, four days on and four days off including weekends and holidays
  • Prolonged sitting or standing at front desk monitoring alarms, cameras and personnel
  • Walking internal and external patrols up to 2 hours each patrol
  • Dealing with emergency events internally and remotely
  • Follow Policies and Procedures provided
  • Deal professionally with internal and external personnel in person and by phone
  • Keeping accurate logs and records

Fitness Requirements

  • Able to constantly stand for at least two (2) hours at a time
  • Able to sit consistently for four (4) hours at a time
  • Able to use PPE for extended periods of time
  • Must be able to conduct extensive foot patrols in excess of 2 1/2 hours, including interior and exterior patrols in all weather conditions
  • Able to repeatedly climb up and down stairs with Westwinds compound facilities
  • Able to look at computer screens for prolonged periods
