Today, we’re honoured to share the story of Ian Stevens, our CWO and 2IC for the security detail at Base Gagetown. For over 20 years, Ian has been a steadfast Commissionaire, working tirelessly at the Main Gate Building in Base Gagetown.
What drew Ian to this remarkable career path? Stevens explains that it was a matter of coincidence and openness to new opportunities. When his wife, who was serving in the military, was posted to Saint John, New Brunswick, Ian found himself searching for a new role. “We got posted to St. John and they were looking for Commissionaires at the docks,” he recalls.
That chance encounter sparked a journey that has spanned two decades. And what has kept Ian with the Commissionaires all these years? “I just like the atmosphere and the Commissionaires,” he shared, reflecting on his years of service. “We get such a variety of people in here. You’ve got military, you’ve got civilian. You’re on a military base, which is great. It all adds up to who you see, who you know in the vicinity and how you work. I just like the camaraderie of most of it. I have a lot of people in here I can rely on for a lot of different things for work.”
A typical workday for Ian starts early, beginning at 6 AM and finishing the day at 2 PM. He is responsible for shift scheduling and managing around 70 commissionaires. “We have up to 19 details with those 70 Commissionaires.” His duties include debriefing night staff, ensuring building security, handling public inquiries, and managing over 300 keys.
One memorable experience was when Commissionaires were asked to provide security in Afghanistan, “Years ago when they asked a bunch of Commissionaires to go to Afghanistan…that was one of the memorable things.”
Ian’s hobbies include playing hockey, fishing and spending time with his grandchildren. “I’m a bit older, but I’m still competitive. I still like to play. I play some ice hockey – pick up and the league, but it’s more gentlemanly. I cut back on my sports because I’ve got a couple of grandkids now. Four and two. they just keep me busy all the time.”
We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Ian Stevens for his remarkable work with Commissionaires. His dedication and contributions have made a significant impact, and we are grateful for his continued service.
