Atlantic Canadian business leaders golf for ill and injured veterans at the Soldier On Atlantic Golf Invitational this Thursday

Moncton, NB –– The Soldier On Atlantic Golf Invitational is returning on July 29, 2021, at Royal Oaks Golf Club in Moncton, NB, after a year off due to COVID-19. Proceeds from the fifth annual charity golf event will benefit Soldier On, a Canadian Armed Forces program that helps serving members and veterans overcome their physical and mental health injuries through physical activity and sport.

Nineteen teams, consisting of leaders from Atlantic Canada’s business community and the public sector, will participate in the tournament. Each team will include one injured veteran from the Soldier On program.

“This golf tournament presents a great opportunity to show our support for wounded soldiers through fundraising for the Soldier On program, and to spend a day alongside them as teammates,” said Jake Bell, Chair of the Board of Governors for Commissionaires, the event co-sponsor.

“We are happy to see the return of many of our traditional sponsors and to add two new co-sponsors, Medavie and Resurgo Insurance.”

Media and the community are invited to attend the event for an up-close look at the Canadian Army armoured vehicles that will be on display, and to watch the flyovers and demonstrations by the Royal Canadian Air Force. Look to the skies during the lunch hour to see both a Cyclone and a Griffon helicopter.

There will be opportunities for media to speak with event organizers, sponsors, business leaders and Armed Forces officials.

The Soldier On program supports people like Mike Feyko, a soldier who was seriously injured in a parachute accident in the line of duty. Mike overcame incredible odds to, not only walk again, but become a Golf Professional after his injury.

“It wasn’t until I became involved with the Soldier On program that I could return to my career,” said Mike, who now helps organize the program’s events. “Now I help others understand the importance of golf as a form of rehabilitation for ill and injured soldiers.”

Esmond Clouthier, Director of Club Operations, is thrilled that Royal Oaks is the official golf course sponsor for the event. “Any support we, as a community, can show the men and women who defend our freedoms and way of life – especially through such a fantastic program as Soldier On – is something we feel strongly about and will continue to be part of.”

ABOUT SOLDIER ON

Since its inception in 2007, Soldier On has helped more than 8,800 ill and injured members to obtain sporting or recreational equipment, gain access to high-level training from world-class instructors and supported their participation in a wide range of structured activities from alpine skiing to fishing to adventure expeditions. This re-introduction to an active lifestyle provides the member with opportunities to develop new skills, build confidence in their abilities and meet peers with similar challenges. Many ill and injured members credit the Soldier On program with helping them to adapt to their new normal, realize their full potential and “soldier on”.

The Soldier On Fund is the most direct way for Canadians to contribute to supporting the recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration of ill and injured members. Program administration costs are covered by the support system within the Canadian Armed Forces, so 100% of donations go directly to support injured soldiers. The fund has disbursed more than $8 million for the purchase of sporting and recreational equipment such as bicycles, golf clubs, kayaks, ski and fishing equipment. The fund also pays for training and travel expenses for members to participate in regional, national and international events.
