Commissionaires Nova Scotia Introduces Chief of People & Culture

Leadership is more than a title, it’s about shaping culture, inspiring people, and driving success. Commissionaires Nova Scotia (CNS) is reinforcing our commitment to a thriving workplace by adding Dalton Wakely to the leadership team in a new role, Chief of People & Culture.

Wakely steps into his role with a clear mandate, to foster a people-first workplace culture, where commissionaires feel inspired, supported and empowered to succeed. A seasoned leader with experience in public policy, diplomatic relations, and people-centered leadership, Wakely brings a wealth of knowledge to CNS.

“I’m thrilled to join Commissionaires and contribute to an organization that blends its historic roots with a modern, community-focused approach,” says Wakely, who is excited to start calling the province of Nova Scotia home. “I’m a motivated, results-driven leader and am passionate about making a difference.”

Inclusivity and progressiveness are among his core passions, aligning seamlessly with the strategic vision for CNS as a forward-thinking, not-for-profit organization who put our people first. Most recently, Wakley served as Director of Operations and Planning to the Minister of Housing, Infrastructure, and Communities. He’s also held senior advisory roles with the Ministers of National Defence and Public Services and Procurement, in addition to working abroad with the British Embassy to France and the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development.

Originally from Port Hope, ON, with family ties throughout Ontario and Newfoundland, Wakely holds a Bachelor of Social Science from the University of Ottawa and a Master of Management from the Université Grenoble Alpes in France. His career has taken him across Canada and internationally, with time spent living in France and Slovakia.

“As the defence and security landscape continues to evolve, a focus on people and culture is crucial. Dalton brings the advocacy experience and leadership at the highest level of government needed to equip our commissionaires with the support to meet emerging challenges,” says Barry Pitcher, CEO of CNS.

Pitcher has thoughtfully assembled a strategic leadership team at CNS since his appointment in 2022, by adding Rebecca Landry as COO, last September alongside Lisette Hachey who has been CFO since 2023. The influence of these innovative leaders has meaningfully impacted the organization. Pitcher continues, “As a not-for-profit, we prioritize investing in our people, ensuring they have the tools, training and leadership to excel in an ever-changing environment.”

Outside of work, Wakley is an avid traveler and lifelong learner. He’s visited over 50 countries across five continents and brings that same spirit of curiosity and connection to his leadership approach.
