Major James Gerald Lynch, M.S.M., C.D. (Ret’d), CEO Commissionaires Newfoundland and Labrador received the Meritorious Service Medal from His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General of Canada, at a ceremony July 13 at the Canadian Museum of Immigration, Halifax, Nova Scotia.
The Meritorious Service Decorations celebrate Canadians who have performed an exceptional deed or activity that brings honour to Canada. The decorations are separated into military and civil divisions, with two levels each: a cross and a medal.
The Civil Division recognizes remarkable contributions in many different fields of endeavour, from advocacy initiatives and health care services, to research and humanitarian efforts. The contributions can be innovative, set an example for others to follow, or improve the quality of life of a community.
Under the leadership of Major James Lynch, the Signal Hill Tattoo has grown into a major source of tourism for Newfoundland and Labrador. Partnering with local schools, this annual summer attraction celebrates the province’s storied military history, including that of the St. John’s Volunteer Rangers, the War of 1812 and the First World War.
“I am deeply honoured to receive this recognition from the Governor General,” said Lynch. “It’s been my privilege to work with a dedicated, talented group of people whose talents ensure that the Signal Hill Tattoo continues to be a highly successful event in St. John’s every year.”
