Commissionaires has appointed David Law as its new Honorary Solicitor. Mr. Law is a partner with Gowling WLG, where he practices employment, labour relations, human rights, occupational safety, worker’s compensation and governance law, with a focus in crisis management. He has received multiple recognitions including being a five-time recipient of a Best Lawyer in Canada award.
In addition to his professional credentials, Mr. Law is deeply committed to the community. He serves as the Chairman of the Ottawa Food Bank, is a member of the Board of Trustees of Ottawa’s Elmwood School and is the former Vice-President of the Ottawa South Community Association and Government Relations Chair for the Canadian Council of Human Resources Associations and the Human Resources Professionals Association of Ontario. A sessional professor at the Queen’s University Faculty of Law, Mr. Law is a Governor of Commissionaires Ottawa, serves on its Governance Committee and has been its legal counsel since 1999.
Mr. Law succeeds Colonel (Ret’d) David Lowdon, OMM, CD, who will retire after providing exemplary service in this role for 10 years.
Colonel Lowdon enjoyed a long and distinguished professional career. He served as a pilot in the RCAF from 1965 to 1996, and was appointed an Officer in the Order of Military Merit in 1993. After 31 years’ service, he left the air force to work at the United Nations secretariat in New York, and then pursued a degree in law. He was called to the Ontario bar in 2001. That same year he joined Perley-Robertson, Hill and McDougall LLP, specializing in among other things, corporate governance.
David Lowdon provided wise counsel and good service to Commissionaires. His presence within the federation will be missed. We wish him all the best as he begins new adventures in retirement.
