Guard of the Year Award

As an important part of Commissionaires Ottawa’s internal recognition program, the Guard of the Year Award commends outstanding duty performance by a commissionaire.

This year’s recipient is:

Cmre Jean-Daniel Roy Section 163, Place Vincent Massey, Gatineau

Cmre Jean-Daniel Roy, a second-generation commissionaire, joined our ranks in 2009 after CEGEP. He spent a few months at other sections before being posted at Section 163 that same year. Initially assigned to provide access control by the elevators, Jean-Daniel—or J-D to his colleagues and friends—proved himself to be highly adaptable, reliable and efficient. Not only did he learn every post, he went on to successfully complete the Commissionaires Supervisor Course (CSC) in 2015.

“J-D is a valuable asset to Section 163,” says Section Supervisor MWO Maurice Caron. “He has a lot of training for one person and can replace any commissionaire at any post, whether it’s the ID card technician, security console operator, receptionist, administrator, fire watch, and others. He is there to replace me whenever I need him to and he’s also my right hand during special events hosted by the Department of Canadian Heritage and especially during emergencies.”

Although J-D’s latest security post is in an office located within view of the loading dock, he also serves as a rover during each shift. This allows him to spend time with every commissionaire and replace them during breaks.

“We have a very good team. There’s a great chemistry here and we get along very well,” says J-D.

Maurice adds, “In all that he does, he has earned a great reputation for having good judgment as well as excellent leadership, organizational and communication skills. He is known for being reliable, kind and professional. J-D is well-liked by our clients.”
