Heart protection: 6 warning signs of a heart attack

February is Heart Month. We’re not talking about Valentine’s Day. The Public Health Agency of Canada (2009) says that nine in 10 Canadians have at least one risk factor for heart disease or stroke. If you feel even one of these symptoms out of the blue, call 9-1-1, rest and wait for help.

Here are the top six warning signs of a heart attack:

• Chest discomfort (uncomfortable chest pressure, squeezing, fullness or pain, burning or heaviness)

• Discomfort in other areas of the upper body (neck, jaw, shoulder, arms, back)

• Shortness of breath

• Sweating

• Nausea

• Light-headedness

If you are having a heart attack, you might experience one or all of the warning signs, and they may not seem severe.

Throughout the next few weeks, The Canadian Heart and Stroke Foundation will fundraise across the country for research and healthy living.
