In recognition of her unwavering dedication and outstanding service, Commissionaire Heather-Jane (HJ) Dupuis has been awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal. This distinguished honor reflects not only her commitment to duty but also the lasting impact she has made on her team, colleagues, and the wider community.
“I absolutely love everything I do with Commissionaires [Nova Scotia],” shared Commissionaire Dupius last summer. “It is the least stressful job I’ve ever had in my entire life.”
For years, she has been a pillar of professionalism, leadership, and mentorship. Commissionaire Dupuis is a valued member of the Commissionaires Nova Scotia (CNS) team, as a Site Supervisor at the Kentville Research Centre and one of the First Aid Instructors. Her journey in service has been defined by a steadfast commitment to excellence, earning the admiration and respect of her peers.
In September, she took on an exciting new challenge, assuming the role of Commanding Officer for the 507 Royal Canadian Air Cadet Squadron in Kentville, NS. She now leads an all-female staff at the squadron, which Dupuis admits, wasn’t intentional. The CEO of CNS, Barry Pitcher, a colonel for the Princess Louise Fusiliers, the Primary Reserve infantry unit of the Canadian Armed Forces in Halifax, NS, had the pleasure of attending the Change of Command Parade in September.

Commissionaire Dupuis has held other positions within the 507 Cadets, Aldershot squadron, including Administration Officer, Training Officer, First Aid Instructor, Range Safety Officer and Deputy Commanding Officer. Commissionaire Dupuis’ past squadrons are 517 Air Cadets in Greenwood, NS and her first posting, 2677 Army Cadets in Pembroke, ON. At both locations, Dupuis held the Commanding Officer role. Through her positions within Cadets, she strives to inspire young leaders, instilling in them the values of discipline, integrity, and teamwork.
“I’ve always wanted to be a commissionaire; my dad was a police officer. [Being a commissionaire] gets me as close to my dad as I can,” said Dupuis when asked why she joined CNS. “I was looking for a new job and saw a posting with Commissionaires, I thought, there’s a reason this door has opened. I walked through it, and here we are.”
As a supervisor, Commissionaire Dupuis leads by example, ensuring that her team feels empowered and confident in their roles. Whether guiding new commissionaires or mentoring seasoned guards, her approach is one of encouragement and respect, making her an invaluable member of CNS.
Beyond her supervisory duties, she is also a dedicated first aid instructor, equipping commissionaires and the public with the critical skills needed to respond effectively in emergency situations. She became a First Aid Instructor for the CNS Kentville District two years ago, bringing with her a wealth of knowledge from her experience with St. John Ambulance (over 15 years) and as First Aid Instructor with Cadets. Her commitment to safety and preparedness speaks volumes about her sense of responsibility and the care she has for the well-being of those around her.
When asked about her First Aid Instructing, Commissionaire Dupuis said “I absolutely love teaching it. The fact that I get to send out a group of people [of all ages], that now can potentially save someone’s life, that’s huge!” She goes on to describe how much she loves teaching and how she values the opportunity to impact these essential skills, enriching the community in meaningful ways.
Commissionaire Dupuis’ impact extends far beyond the workplace. Within the broader community, her leadership has been instrumental in shaping young cadets into future leaders, reinforcing the values of service and duty. Under her guidance, cadets learn not only the technical skills required in their roles but also the importance of character, resilience, and camaraderie. The 507 Squadron continues to grow, they are up to over 30 cadets and are always welcoming more. Learn more about the Canadian Cadet program on their website.
Receiving the King Charles III Coronation Medal is a significant milestone for Commissionaire Dupuis, honoring her hard work, dedication, and the profound impact she has had on the people and communities she serves. Congratulations to Commissionaire Dupuis on this well-deserved honour! This recognition highlights her unwavering commitment to service and her ability to inspire and guide others. As she continues to set an example through her actions, her legacy of excellence will shape future generations, leaving a lasting mark for years to come.
