This month, the Commissionaires National Office in Ottawa hosted Northern Alberta Division Commissionaire John O’Connor. During his visit, he was celebrated for his courageous actions at Edmonton City Hall earlier this year.
John, an Edmonton native, has dedicated his life to service. Prior to joining Commissionaires, he served with the Canadian Army’s Royal Canadian Regiment, deploying to Afghanistan in 2003. Following his retirement from the military in 2016, John transitioned into civilian life by opening his own business, which fell victim to the Covid-19 pandemic. Needing work, someone suggested he consider a career with Commissionaires. Joining the Corps in February 2023, he quickly advanced to a team leader position, taking on numerous responsibilities, including becoming a certified Pressure Point Control Tactics (PPCT) instructor. Drawing on his military experience, he excelled in challenging security roles, including those at Edmonton Light Rail Transit and Fort Hills Road Yard, where he earned a reputation as a trusted professional.
The courageous actions referenced above occurred on January 23, 2024. While on duty at Edmonton City Hall, John faced a violent individual who was armed with Molotov cocktails and a rifle, endangering people in the building. As the fire alarm sounded, John grabbed an extinguisher to respond to the fire that was set. However, upon hearing gunfire ripple through the hallways, he knew he had to confront the attacker. His previous military experience kicked in. John moved calmly toward the sound of the shots and faced the attacker head-on. When John saw the gunman, he ordered him to stop and get on the ground. The gunman followed John’s verbal commands and dropped to the floor, allowing O’Connor to restrain him until police arrived.
John’s quick and selfless actions earned him widespread praise. Edmonton’s Mayor, City Council, and the Chief of Police publicly commended him for his bravery.
While in Ottawa, John’s actions were celebrated in various ways, including his attendance at the 32nd annual Vimy Gala—a significant event for defence and security professionals which focuses on recognizing service. At the gala, he was honoured in the presence of Members of Parliament, Senators, foreign dignitaries, and Canadian Armed Forces leaders. Alongside his friend, Toni, John also enjoyed exploring Ottawa’s cultural offerings, including a Senators hockey game (despite being an Edmonton Oilers fan) and received a private tour of the Canadian War Museum.
Commissionaires Chief of Staff, retired Royal Canadian Navy captain Harry Harsch, attended the Vimy Gala with John and stated: “Commissionaire O’Connor’s heroic actions showed us the true power of selflessness and bravery. We were thrilled to be able to honour John in such a meaningful way in Ottawa.”
With support from the Lord Elgin Hotel, John and Toni had a wonderful place to rest during their busy week of activities.
