Spring Forward

It may not look, or feel like it yet, but spring is just over 2 weeks away. The first true hint came yesterday when we all (well, hopefully everyone remembered to) turn our clocks ahead one hour.

This is also the perfect time to perform some other home maintenance tasks.  By associating clock changes with these basic chores you can help establish a routine, ensuring they’re done twice a year, and not overlooked.

Here’s a “spring forward” must-do list:

Change the batteries in your smoke and CO2 detectors.

Smoke alarms save lives. Using two memorable dates a year (the spring and fall time changes) can help ensure the batteries in these life-saving devices are fresh. You should also test them regularly to make sure that they work properly, and ensure the devices are not being used beyond their expiry date. You can minimize your family's risk of fire-related injury or death by installing the right number of smoke alarms in the right places in your home, and by ensuring they remain in good working order.

Change your filters.

Dirty filters can lead to the use of more energy and cause dust. Check the filters on your furnace, air conditioning unit(s), vacuum cleaner(s), dishwasher, and humidifier(s). While you are at it schedule a central heating/cooling system check. Semi-annual maintenance can help ensure your heating and cooling systems are operating at peak performance when you need them, and may help prevent breakdowns.

Check your home’s foundation for signs of wear.

Cracks in your home’s foundation can lead to water getting into your home, which can cause major problems during spring thaw or heavy rains. Take a stroll around your home and look for cracks, and making sure that there is no snow pushed up against the foundation.  Some cracks can be fixed easily with a sealant; others may need more extensive repairs.  If you’re not sure, contact a professional to ensure problems are dealt with properly.

Start your spring cleaning.

Purging and organizing the items in your home can help make it a safer, healthier, and happier place to live. The best place to start is your closet. It can help create a sense of accomplishment before dealing with the dreaded basement.

Now all that’s left to do is to look forward to the warmer weather ahead and making the most of the longer evenings!
