The holiday season is a time for spending quality time with (and spoiling) our loved ones. It’s very easy to get caught up in the jubilation brought on by great company. Thankfully, Commissionaires is always thinking about you and your safety. To help you avoid any unpleasant surprises this holiday season, we have compiled a list of some safety tips for you to consider.
ROAD SAFETY
Winter conditions are poor a best. Although driving cautiously is more obvious on a day with low visibility, winter driving can be just as dangerous when the sun is shining. A clear day can still be extremely cold, causing an increased chance of both black ice and bright reflections on the road. “Drive according to weather conditions at all times. If your vehicle begins to skid, take your foot off the brake and steer in the direction you want to go. SHOPPING SAFETY
It’s 2018, the days of crowding a store and fighting for the last product are (almost) behind us. Consumers are looking to avoid crowds and are increasingly doing their holiday shopping online—putting you at great risk for identity fraud. Be extremely cautious when inputting your credit card number online, and be sure to only purchase items through certified, secure payment sites. Furthermore, after shopping, be sure to closely monitor your credit card statement for any irregularities.
HOME SAFETY
Many Canadians seek solace in warm countries to escape our harsh winter. Whether you’re only leaving for a weekend, or three months, take measures to ensure your home is monitored.
Did you know, employing Commissionaires’ Home Watch services protects you from more than potential break-ins? In addition to monitoring for suspicious activity, Commissionaires “monitors and coordinates the repair for anything that goes wrong in the home owner’s absence—water main, broken furnace, etc.” Whether you consult Commissionaires or a trusted neighbour, “providing security codes and a list of things to verify, as well as trusted vendors for worst-case scenarios can save you from returning home to an unfortunate situation.” —Commissionaires Manitoba Division.
DRINK RESPONSIBLY
Simply put, don’t drink and drive. If you are the designated driver, please be respectful to those working at roadside checks, and ensure your passengers do the same.
If you are entertaining, you have to be certain that your guests don’t drink and drive, and that you steer clear of what we call, “reckless hosting.” That means avoiding social faux pas like making “fake martinis.” Thankfully, our Chief of Staff, Harry Harsch, is here to lend a hand. (Like we said, we’re always thinking ahead.)
