Training and Instinct Saves a Life

National Board Chair’s Letter of Commendation Awarded to two brave Nova Scotia Division commissionaires.

Commissionaires work at various levels of risk and intensity, with one major goal deeply woven into the atmosphere of the location and job description— protecting Canadians.

Commissionaires Harold Beazley and Danny Smith provide security services at a Corrections Services Canada site in Nova Scotia. The location hosts federal offenders who are working toward reintegrating into society after serving prison time. Harold and Danny are required to combine their skills with sharp intuition as situations can change at any moment.

During a night shift this spring, their specialized training was put to the test when a resident faced an emergency medical situation. Both Harold and Danny immediately jumped into action, performing CPR and working alongside medical responders and law enforcement to ensure stability was maintained among other residents and staff.

These quick actions saved a young man’s life.

Clear thinking is critical in high pressure situations. For this meritorious act, these two outstanding commissionaires were presented with a National Board Chair’s Letter of Commendation in May. Commissionaires National Board Chair, VAdm Dusty Miller, and CNS CEO Bruce Belliveau delivered the award in person.
