Did you know that challenge coins have a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the Roman Empire? Originally awarded to soldiers as symbols of honour and service, challenge coins have evolved over centuries into a tradition recognized worldwide.
The practice of presenting challenge coins gained popularity during the Vietnam War in the 1960s and 1970s—largely driven by its widespread use among U.S. servicemembers. Canada soon followed suit. Though there were instances of challenge coins being presented before, the first “official” Canadian Armed Forces use is believed to have originated in the 1970s with the Canadian Airborne Regiment. By the 2000s, challenge coins had become a well-established and celebrated tradition in Canada in both military circles and even some civilian organizations.
As Commissionaires proudly marks 100 years of service to Canada, we are excited to introduce our specially minted Centennial Challenge Coin. Designed to commemorate a century of dedication to security, innovation, and community, this coin is a testament to the contributions of those who have helped shape our legacy.
The Centennial Challenge Coin is more than a keepsake—it’s a symbol of belonging, appreciation, and our enduring commitment to honouring service. By presenting these coins to nearly 22,000 commissionaires, we continue a longstanding tradition that connects us to our history while celebrating our bright future.
